QUOTE OF THE WEEK:
I say to you today, my friends, so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream. I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal." I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood. I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice. I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.

ARROGANT VS. VULGAR
08/07/2008

John McCain's new ads touting Obama as a celebrity reinforce his strategy to portray his opponent as arrogant. Now, it could easily be proven that McCain is arrogant, that indeed every presidential candidate has a huge ego, otherwise they could never contemplate running for president. Guys who think they are deficient or dumb or inadequate don't wake up one morning and say "I think I'll run for president."

We all know that painting Obama with the arrogant label, however, is code for "Uppity N****." It's okay for white candidates to be arrogant, but not black candidates.

Nevertheless, McCain's attacks may be having some effect, so it really is time to fight back with a desription of McCain that is clear and straightforward. It's time we Obama supporters started using the word that best describes McCain, and it isn't POW.

It's "vulgar."

John McCain is a very vulgar man and has been most of his public life.

The examples are out there, though the press doesn't want to make too much of it, and Obama's official campaign won't touch it.

But I will.

Here are just a few examples of what I know about John McCain (and if you want more, just google "McCain vulgar" and you'll find a lot of reputable sources documenting McCain's vulgarities.)

Let's start with McCain's "jokes," which he thinks he can get away with because, as he says, you have to have a sense of humor.

These "jokes" have mostly been at the expense of the elderly and women, including his wife.

David Corn, reporting in Salon, says that at a fundraiser in 1998 McCain joked about the Clinton's 18 year old daughter: "Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly? Because her father is Janet Reno."

McCain himself confirmed the story when he apologized some years later. Of course, until now, the press has largely ignored the tasteless joke, possibly to protect Chelsea Clinton from such boorish behavior, but more likely to protect their pet candidate McCain.

The media did report, briefly, that at a campaign event this year McCain didn't object to a questioner at a Town Hall meeting who, referring to Hillary Clinton, asked "How do we beat the bitch?"

McCain commented that the question was an "excellent" one.

The AP reported on October 18, 2007, that when McCain was at the University of South Carolina Upstate nursing school, he saw a mannequin and said he was glad to "meet the dummy, named 'Hillary.' "

McCain doesn't confine his vulgarities regarding women to the Clintons. His wife Cindy is a favorite object of his foul mouth. Once, according to three different Arizona reporters who observed the incident, Cindy McCain playfully commented that her husband's hair was getting a little thin on top. McCain responded by saying "At least I don't plaster on the makeup like a trollop, you c***."

And just recently, while at a biker festival in South Dakota, John McCain offered up his wife as a contestant in the festival's beauty contest – Miss Buffalo Chip – a contest that involves skimpy bikinis, nudity and the suggestive use of bananas.

Politico.com reports three examples of McCain's vulgarities, two about the elderly and one about rape.

In his 1986 campaign he referred to Leisure World, a retirement community, as ""Seizure World," and in 1999 told another joke at the expense of the elderly. "The nice thing about having Alzheimer's," he said, is "you get to hide your own Easter eggs."

He also told this "joke": Did you hear the one about the woman who is attacked on the street by a gorilla, beaten senseless, raped repeatedly and left to die? When she finally regains consciousness and tries to speak, her doctor leans over to hear her sigh contently and to feebly ask, 'Where is that marvelous ape?' "

And then, we all know the song McCain sang when he was asked what he would do about Iran. To the tune of the Beach Boys' famous "Barbara Ann," he sang "Bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb Iran." A few months later he "joked" that exporting cigarettes to Iran was "a good way to kill them."

It is important to stress that none of these stories or "jokes" was told at a reunion of flyboys from Vietnam, in private, after everyone is plastered. They were told in mixed company, often before microphones. And we aren't talking about one single incident. We are talking about a pattern of vulgar and sick comments that, combined with McCain's famous temper which has even caused some of his fellow Republican Senators to express concerns about his being president, makes him a terrible choice for the leader of this nation.

One dirty little secret about Republican candidates, office holders and celebrity supporters, especially those that claim to be holier-than-thou "Christians," is that they tend to be vulgar, unfaithful, and sexually perverted. Larry Craig, David Vitter, Mark Foley, Ted Haggard, and Dr. David Hager are just the most well known. There are dozens of lesser known figures in the party who have had to resign because of sexual scandals. Two candidates for speaker of the House after Gingrich resigned had to give up the position because of adulterous affairs that were revealed. And we all know about Newt Gingrich throwing over two wives for other women, and John McCain throwing over one for Cindy.

However scandalous these men are, however, the only one that I am concerned about is the one running for president, John McCain. There are a lot of things we can say about McCain that should disqualify him for the presidency. He is forgetful, dishonest, ignorant and dangerous. But the one that I hope people begin to see, the one that people can understand, is that he is vulgar.

If it's a choice between a candidate who is labeled as arrogant and a man who is clearly vulgar, I'll take the arrogant man.

But the reality is that Barack Obama is not arrogant. He is intelligent, self-confident and composed. He behaves with dignity and appropriateness. He does not make fun of the elderly, and he doesn't tell off color jokes about women or inflammatory jokes about a foreign country.

McCain, on the other hand, is a vulgar man who would be an embarrassment in the White House.
