03/27/2009 Rush Limbaugh, Fox News, Michelle Malkin and various Republican wing nuts are attacking Barack Obama for – brace yourself – using a teleprompter when he gives speeches. The Republicans are still bowing to the mighty thrice divorced, drug addicted, angry, hostile talk radio host as the party guru/bully. Republicans are rushing to say "yes" to the big question of the day: Do they want President Obama to fail? First the teleprompter. Apparently the fact that Obama is highly skilled at using a teleprompter when he gives speeches or opening statements before a press conference is to be ridiculed. This, even though George W. Bush used a teleprompter, and when he did it was the only time he sounded more intelligent than a third grader. When he didn't, he was completely incoherent. The difference with Obama is that he sounds polished and eloquent when he uses one, but still smart and coherent when he doesn't. The question isn't to teleprompt or not to teleprompt. The question is whether or not the President can put a sentence together and sound intelligent. Bush couldn't. Obama can, even without a teleprompter. Since this makes Bush look inferior, Republicans must make it look like Obama always uses a teleprompter and that is the only reason he sounds so eloquent. Except anyone who pays attention knows that Obama speaks beautifully even off the teleprompter. This is apparently the big deal of the wing nut crowd over the past week: discrediting Obama with a distraction and a lie. Sad, just sad. The economy needs our full attention, but the psychopath Rush Limbaugh knows nothing about the complexities of the economy (all he knows is how to ram down our throats his ideology of low taxes and no regulation, which of course has led us to the disasters in the current economy) so he throws out a red herring. Which brings me to my second point: the Republican Party guru. Why do I call him a psychopath? Because he has no conscience, no morals, no ethics. The man is a showman and a snake oil salesman. He urges people to hate. He calls all kinds of innocent people names. No one is beyond the reach of his bile-soaked tongue. He lures listeners in with his attempts to be funny, and with his appeal to the disgruntled members of our society who need someone to focus their anger on, and since there are plenty of angry Americans, he has a big audience. The Republican Party is supposed to be the party of values, the party of the religious right, the party of ethics, the party of conservatism. Yet nothing this man does in his actual life reflects any ethics, morals, or conservative values. He has been married and divorced three times. I know that puts him in the same category as Newt Gingrich and other Republican hypocritical peddlers of values, but what kind of disconnect must exist in people who claim to abide by Christian values even as they enjoy his radio bile? He has also been a drug addict, instructing his maid to buy drugs illegally for him. And while he claims to be recovered, I doubt very much that his drug days are over, judging by his hyperactive behavior during the recent speech he gave at a conservative conference. And the hate with Limbaugh is endless. Years ago, when I actually listened to some of his programs, I heard him attack everyone from the Girl Scouts to Mary Jo Kopeckne, the unfortunate girl who drowned in Ted Kennedy's car. I heard him say feminists were ugly women who couldn't attract men. I've heard him call Democrats Nazis and Communists, make fun of ordinary people trying to make a difference, and ridicule every American leader with whom he could find the slightest flaw, as if he had none of his own. And how could anyone, who had any compassion at all, forget his mocking of Michael J. Fox, crudely imitating his Parkinsonian tremors? My father has an atypical Parkinsonian syndrome called Progressive Supranuclear Palsy. He cannot walk, see, read, talk or even feed himself. He is depressed and wants to die. I know how cruel these Parkinsonian diseases are, and in mocking someone with Parkinson's Disease, Rush Limbaugh sealed my assessment of him: He is a psychopath. He is heartless. This man not only attacks Democrats, he attacks those who are his natural allies, and strikes such fear in them that they must immediately retract any criticism of him lest something terrible happen to them. He is a bully and they are cowards. How any person who calls himself a Christian, a follower of the man who preached love and forgiveness, could take Rush Limbaugh seriously is a complete mystery to me. And that politicians in the Republican Party hail him as their de facto leader makes them as heartless and insane as he is. And now he has started a fad in the Republican Party: saying he wants the newly elected President of the United States, a man who has inherited the worst economic and foreign policy situations in decades (from an administration Limbaugh supported) to fail. Even "Bobby Brady" Jindal, the great young hope of the Republican Party, is following the Limbaugh meme and saying he too hopes Obama fails. This betrays what the Republican Party is about: hope that a rival in power will fail so that they can be resurrected from the death spiral they find themselves in. We need to stop and think about this for a minute. The leaders of the Republican Party are saying outright that they want the newly elected President of the United States to fail. What exactly does that mean? What do they want him to fail at? They want him to fail in saving this economy. They want his policies to fail, his plan to rescue us from further decline. In spite of the fact that a large majority of the American people approve of Obama's policies and want to give him a chance to make things better, the Republicans will have none of it. The Republicans have decided that their future as a party and their desire to return to power are more important that the well being of the country, more important than the well being of its citizens. This is an extremely important point to consider. Republican leaders are saying "screw you" to the people of this country. They are saying they are willing to root for the failure of the American people just so they can regain the White House. They care nothing about the "common good" or about "we the people." They care about their party, their power, and their ideology, even though their ideology has been an abysmal failure. Whom do they remind me of? Who else is rooting for the failure of the American people? None other than Osama bin Laden. If Obama's policies succeed, we all win. Our 401Ks will creep up again. Jobs will return. The tent cities around the country will go away. Home ownership will come back. Health care will be guaranteed to all. Climate change will be slowed down. Our dependence on foreign oil will end. Our children will have a future. Sure a few wealthy people might have to pay a little more in taxes. Big deal! How many houses, vacations, cars and luxuries does one family need? Obama needs the cooperation as well as the constructive criticism of Republicans and Democrats in order to help the country. He has reached out to Republicans with an open hand and they have slapped it down. They do not want to cooperate because they believe if Obama succeeds, they will lose. If Obama succeeds, ordinary Americans will benefit. If Obama fails, we all lose, except perhaps for some Republican leaders. But they want Obama to fail. Which means they want the rest of us to lose, to fail, to suffer. They are willing to risk the destruction of the economy and the destruction of the country. And for what? For their own gain, for their own power. They have, in essence, declared war on Obama, war on the leader of the country and those who elected him. If that isn't treason, I don't know what is.
