06/03/2010 It’s bad enough that humans are fouling their own nest every day, destroying the air they breathe, and the seas that provide nourishment. But there are actually high profile people, with big microphones, who are doing everything they can to ensure they keep fouling it – for pure power, money and political advantage. Three names come to mind: Rush Limbaugh, followed by Charles Krauthammer, followed by the idiot queen, (or is that the queen of idiots?) Sarah Palin. It started with Rush Limbaugh, one of the most immoral, cruel, deceptive, and hostile radio personalities out there. He began the meme by making it up in his drug-shrunken brain, which is how he begins every piece of propaganda. He wants to blame environmentalists for the oil disaster in the Gulf. To paraphrase: “If the environmentalists hadn’t lobbied to stop or prevent oil drilling in Alaska and in the shallow waters, this deep water tragedy would not have happened.” Then Krauthammer, who rarely has an original thought, picked it up and tried to make it an intellectual argument by writing an op-ed. And now we have come full circle to the brainless woman from Wasilla--she of "drill, baby, drill" fame--who is screaming the same lie from her facebook page. Before I refute the entire bunch of nonsense, let’s consider for a minute why this is happening, why these deliberately deceptive people have begun this story. It has been nearly fifty days since the deepwater explosion and the deaths of 11 men. The conservative talkers have largely been silent during that time because they had no defense. They are the ones who love oil companies and deregulation. They are the ones who shouted “drill, baby, drill” like a bunch of clueless children. They are the ones who care nothing about protecting the wetlands in Louisiana, saving the city of New Orleans, or weaning this country off oil. So when the environmentalists' warnings were ignored, and their worse nightmares came true, proving their opponents wrong, republicans and conservatives were left with their pants down. They had no defense. As the oil crept closer and closer to shore, and animals and vegetation were strangled, the conservatives had to do something. They couldn’t attack Obama for not acting fast enough, as the progressives did, because that would only draw attention to the damage that their conservative (what a misnomer - what are they conserving?) policies have done. So, before they could blame Obama, they had to first find someone else to blame for the disaster. Hence the argument: “If the environmentalists had let us pollute and destroy the planet the way we wanted to, Louisiana would be safe now.” In effect, that is what they are saying. Here’s why they’re wrong. Environmentalists don’t just oppose oil drilling in Alaska. They oppose oil drilling everywhere. They certainly oppose it off shore, and even more so in deep water. They object because of the very thing that happened over a month ago: accidents leading to environmental disaster. Except, you can’t really characterize this as an accident. This was negligence. BP cut corners, and used techniques they should not have used. BP is a murdering, criminal enterprise, no matter how many jobs it provides. If the mafia said, “Don’t shut us down because we create jobs,” would we go along with it? Additionally, oil disasters in shallow water are just as deadly and difficult to clean up. Environmentalists' know this which is why they oppose all off-shore drilling. Environmentalists oppose drilling for another reason. They want to see the countries of the world switch to alternate sources of energy – those that protect the atmosphere and the land. They want an end to pollution and the accumulation of dangerous levels of carbon in the atmosphere. If the country was really paying heed to the environmentalists, who began calling for a change in energy over fifty years ago, we would already be using different sources of fuel and there would be millions of new jobs. It is not the environmentalists, by any stretch of whatever imagination still left in the drug-addled brain of Limbaugh, who pushed drilling into deep water. It is the greedy oil companies that found huge sources of oil there, and drilled without any understanding of how to solve a leak, should one occur. Regardless of BP’s deceptive commercials that say they are “beyond petroleum,” they are up to their greedy little eyeballs in petroleum. They have no intention of switching to alternative energy sources until they have to. The big short-term money is in oil, and they want the big money. To say this is the fault of the environmentalists is like saying spousal abuse is the fault of wives, because if only they had let their husbands yell at them, or if they had just done everything the men wanted them to do, they would not have bruises and broken bones. Or it’s like saying if only the authorities had promised not to arrest Catholic priests for child molestation, then the Bishops would not have felt the need to protect and reassign them and expose more children to their abuse. Those of you who believe the nonsense of Limbaugh, Krauthammer and Palin are not using critical thinking skills. You are grasping for anything—no matter how illogical—to free yourselves and your favorite politicians of blame and guilt. Your entire “blame the environmentalist” line of reasoning is flawed. You can stretch a lie this way, and stretch it that way, but it’s still a lie. You can twist yourself into a pretzel trying to make yourself fit into the deceptive box of conservative logic, but you’ll only end up with muscle cramps. And in the meantime, you’ll be doing nothing to protect the planet. Think, people. Use your brains, if you have any after giving them over to Sarah Palin, who has no brain, and Rush Limbaugh who is getting rich brainwashing you. (Talk about the blind leading the blind.) It makes absolutely no sense to blame the environmentalists for this. If conservatives had heeded the warnings of environmentalists, there would be no oil rigs in the Gulf. And for God’s sake, if you love your fellow man and want your grandchildren to live on this planet, stop defending the oil companies. They do not care one whit about you or your children. They just killed eleven people. They could and would just as easily kill your children. And they would destroy every inch of Ocean, wetlands and Alaskan tundra for a buck.
